Greetings and welcome to all those of you who have taken time to look in on us. This update is so late that it makes me feel like the rabbit that Alice followed down the rabbit hole, finding herself in Wonderland! As some of you know, most of my travels are undertaken on my own, and it’s not because I don’t want Margaret with me, it’s just more economical in terms of rail fares. However, in March, Margaret and I travelled to Scotland by train. When we got to our local station, Neath, a member of the station staff looked at Margaret and said: “Are you going with him?” Margaret said she was, at which the man said ruefully, “It’s about time you put your foot down!” But in April, I was on my own again, travelling to Minehead in Somerset; Inskip near Preston; Ashington and Stokesley in N. Yorkshire, and the Isle of Wight. A really busy month of travel and blessing, including Easter at home – a very rare occurrence. In May I had to undergo a stomach operation which slowed me down. (Perhaps that wasn’t a bad thing.) We had to postpone two local bookings, which we later re-scheduled, and shortly after the surgery, Margaret travelled with me again, this time by road so that I didn’t have to carry heavy luggage. In a recent newsletter, I remember paying a well-earned tribute to Margaret for all that she does here at home. Now, my tribute is to her intrepid driving hundreds of miles, first of all to Lowestoft on the East coast, and to Sussex on the south coast of England. It was so comparatively restful for me, and a treat for us to be together. We prolonged our visit to Sussex-by-the-Sea with Ken and Christine Grant so as to include our forty-fourth wedding anniversary – it was lovely! In mid-June, I was in Gloucester for the weekend, including the Torch Fellowship Group there. On the Saturday afternoon, some five folk responded to the call of the gospel, and that gave me great joy. All too often, blind people have to forgo the right to hear an intelligent and reasoned presentation of the Christian faith, very often because sighted people are ignorant of their needs. Yet there are a dedicated band of sighted people across the land who are doing a tremendous work under the banner of Torch. And if this stirs any interest in your heart, do follow the link on this website to torch trust for the Blind. After the cold Spring, we look forward to a relatively warm, or even, hot summer. We had a taste of it towards the end of May into June, and in spite of the water shortage, especially in the South-East of England, we can’t help hoping for settled, warm weather, can we? We simply can’t close our Jottings without some reference to the World Cup which is raging even as I write this piece. Certain questions arise: will this be David Beckham’s last World Cup? Will Graham Pole, the English referee be re-instated after getting his three-card trick wrong? Can England still go on winning because, rather than in spite, of the opposition? And one little joke for the children to prove that the old ones are the best:- Two flies were playing football in a saucer. One said to the other: “We’ve got to play better than this, we’re in the cup next week!” May God’s blessing surround you each day. MARGARET & PETER To return to the home page - click here
